    We do not use a fixed number of cases as the measure of a healthy caseload. Family law matters vary too much in complexity and demands for that to tell us very much.

    Instead, we look at whether the attorney is controlling the work: meeting productivity expectations, keeping deadlines under control, communicating with clients, maintaining client satisfaction, and generating the expected revenue from the practice. One attorney may be productive with fewer complex cases while another effectively manages a larger number of less demanding matters.

    The goal is a workload the attorney can manage well, not an arbitrary case count.

    Employees have monthly one-on-one meetings with their direct supervisors and quarterly meetings with a partner. Those conversations provide a regular opportunity to discuss performance, workload, problems, development, and what comes next.

    For attorneys, performance includes measurable factors such as productivity, collections, and client complaints, but those numbers are not the entire picture. We also care about professional judgment, communication, control of cases, quality of work, use of firm systems, and the ability to take on greater responsibility.

    New matters are assigned by the partner serving as our Chief Legal Officer. Assignments are based first on office and location, then on workload, experience, availability, and whether the attorney is a good fit for the matter.

    We use a weekly workload survey and open communication between surveys to identify changes in capacity. Attorneys can raise concerns about an assignment, particularly when the subject matter, client relationship, or current workload makes another attorney a better fit. Attorneys who have demonstrated that they can consistently manage their practices also have greater discretion over their caseloads

    It depends on the problem. Our usual first response is coaching and an effort to understand what is getting in the way of success.

    The solution may involve additional training, closer supervision, more frequent feedback, clearer expectations, or changes to the way work is being managed. We try to tailor the response to the actual problem rather than assume that every performance issue has the same cause.

    Some problems are more serious than others, however. Significant failures involving clients, professional responsibility, or repeated disregard of expectations require a faster and more direct response. We want people to succeed, but that also requires someone to respond to coaching and make the necessary changes.

    Yes—but we expect people to use the existing system while proposing the change.

    Our processes exist to create consistent standards and prevent every employee from having to invent a new way of handling routine work. Often, a variation someone proposes has been tried before, and there may be reasons the current process developed as it did.

    At the same time, no system is beyond improvement. Employees are encouraged to identify problems and bring better ideas to a partner. We are willing to test and adopt improvements, but we do so deliberately, with enough coordination and feedback to determine whether the new approach should become part of the firm’s standard way of working.

    Family law is personal work, and clients often come to us during some of the most difficult periods of their lives. Caring about the outcome matters. However, taking a client’s problems home as your own does not help either the client or the professional serving them.

    People who succeed here learn to remain compassionate while maintaining professional boundaries. They give candid advice, follow the firm’s financial and case-management systems, and understand that helping a client does not mean extending unlimited credit, doing uncompensated work, or becoming personally responsible for solving every problem in the client’s life.

    Losing that perspective can create emotional strain, poor decisions, and eventually burnout. We want professionals who care deeply about clients while remaining steady enough to serve them well over the long term.

    Bellevue

    Bellevue combines a major business center with quick access to Lake Washington, parks, trails, restaurants, and the broader Seattle region. It offers an urban-suburban setting with strong schools, established neighborhoods, and extensive cultural and recreational options.

    Olympia

    Olympia offers a smaller-city pace with access to Puget Sound, forests, waterfront parks, and Washington’s capital district. The area is known for its walkable downtown, local restaurants, outdoor recreation, and easy connections to both Tacoma and the Olympic Peninsula.

    Spokane

    Spokane combines the amenities of a regional city with easy access to rivers, lakes, skiing, hiking, and Eastern Washington’s outdoor landscape. Its neighborhoods, universities, arts community, and lower cost of living make it attractive to people seeking both city life and room to breathe.

    The Tri-Cities

    The Tri-Cities offer sunshine, river access, trails, wineries, and a growing collection of restaurants and community events. Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco provide a connected regional community with outdoor recreation and a more relaxed pace than the Puget Sound area.

    Yakima

    Yakima offers access to hiking, skiing, rivers, vineyards, orchards, and a strong agricultural and food culture. The region has a lower cost of living than Western Washington and provides a practical home base for exploring Central Washington.

    Walla Walla

    Walla Walla is known for its historic downtown, wineries, restaurants, arts, and surrounding agricultural landscape. It offers a close-knit community, a distinctive local identity, and ready access to outdoor recreation throughout southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon.
